Why Do Pro Bono Work?
It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 3 years since we opened our doors here at TMD Winnipeg. To say it’s been an interesting 3 years is an understatement. In our short existence, we’ve managed to win some great accounts, loose some great accounts, we passed on some opportunities we shouldn’t have and we took on accounts that weren’t a great match for us.
Perhaps one of the most important lessons we’ve learnt is to stay humble. While our first reaction after winning a great accounts is to shout it from the roof tops, we know all too well that we’re in an extremely competitive business and that being humble is what will help to position us as a great Winnipeg agency.
For a new agency, Pro bono work can seem to be a daunting and intimidating prospect. It may seem crazy to even think about adding pro bono work to an already maximised workload however, here are 3 reasons pro bono work is something we invest time into:
1. The atmosphere.
Working on pro bono projects can be incredibly fulfilling for our team. Knowing we’re helping an organization who really values and needs our help creates a difference in atmosphere that brings new life to the team.
2. Community involvement.
Like most small businesses we’re often asked to sponsor various events and programs. While doing so is a great way to get involved in our community, pro bono projects can deepen our involvement and help build stronger connections.
Relationships built through these projects lead to great things. Connecting with a board member that needs assistance in developing a marketing strategy or a volunteer on a committee that refers us for a new website project is a great way to generate paid work.
How we choose who to work with
One of the most obvious strategies in choosing who to work with is finding a cause you’re passionate about……however we have to remind ourselves to exercise CAUTION! We’re still a business and we still need to think like a business.
- Organization must be a registered nonprofit
- Final decision maker must be committed to attending all meetings
- Organization must have reasonably well defined marketing goals
- Organization must be within our geographic location
If you’re involved with a registered non profit group that needs some help, feel free to shoot us an email and let us know who you are and what you need.
